Applying for an Open Burning Exemption

The exemption form should be returned by U.S. mail to our office at least three (3) business days prior to the start of the scheduled burning, or faxed to (913) 715-6970. Please complete all sections and write legibly.

You must include a map of the burn location with your application. A hand-drawn map is adequate but must be legible. Try using Johnson County’s Automated Information Mapping System or Yahoo Maps to pinpoint the burn location and print the map.

SkyCast

On June 15, 2007 the Kansas City region violated the EPA health standard for ozone. All exemptions issued on or after July 19, 2007, for burning activities requiring this exemption will be restricted to days when the SkyCast is predicted to be “Green” as determined only by the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC). Exceptions can be granted for activities such as but not limited to fire extinguisher training.

At left is the current SkyCast forecast.  At around 3 pm, the SkyCast indicator will show the forecast for the next day.

The signed application should be faxed to 913-715-6970 or mailed to:
